Ten years ago I was dismayed to see lots of plastic litter on a nearby Dorset beach and made a New Year resolution to pick up 3 pieces of litter each time I visited & leave it “a little tidier “. That has escalated to regular Beachcleans on my local beaches along the Jurassic Coastline of West Dorset, in SW England. Sometimes it is just ten minutes collecting a few bits after work; other times 2-3 hours blitzing the beach when it is really bad. In winter it is mainly old plastic, bits of fishing nets, and debris. In summer there is a lot of takeaway food packaging. Nothing surprises me anymore. I wish there was less single use plastic. Vapes and their packaging are a new - big - problem. There is always an odd sock! If beachcleaning helps to educate ignorant people, and saves sea creatures from dying it is worth the effort.
I have met a lot of new friends who litterpick/Beachclean via social media. There is a supportive community of Trashweirdos worldwide! It’s good exercise, in the fresh air and it helps make the world a better place. Cheryl, West Bay, Dorset.
