I am Pieter Elsen, founder of Canal It Up. Four years ago I was reading my newspaper next to the canal in the center of Brussels when I saw trash floating by on the water. I decided that I would buy a kayak to go and fish it out myself.
Everything that happened afterwards wasn't planned. Every week another friend joined me on the water, afterwards people I didn't know, other people wanted to start doing the cleanup trips as well. I started to see the other problems of the waterways in Brussels as well so started to think about structural solutions. Canal It Up was born.
Today we are a non-for profit organisation that tries to solve the problems of floating trash, bad water quality and lack of nature and biodiversity and the waterways in Brussels. Therefore we organize the cleanup trips by kayak for new people every time and we work out structural solutions for the problems.
